BB Chatting (Part Dos): Whats App

Whatsapp! (Pun on what’s up, get it GETIT?!). Anyway, I can’t help but be reminded of my Minnesotan-family members trying to say “what’s up” in their minneSOhtah accent.
I have to thank my friend, who’s currently residing in South Africa, for telling me about this app.

RIM offers free PlayBook for app developers

Is this RIM’s solution to their app-less PlayBook problem?  First we heard that RIM was looking at making the PlayBook compatible with Android’s more than 130,000 apps in an effort to boost PlayBook sales & create a bunch of hype pre-launch.  Now RIM is offering free PlayBooks (through mid-March) for app developers who create a “quality” PB app.  Once you submit it, if RIM likes it, bam! Free PlayBook for you.

It’s that easy. Or is it?

RIM to solve App-less PlayBook using Android apps?

Well this news is by no means official, but those are the whisperings in the tech world.  Google’s Android, a mobile phone operating system, offers a software development kit for app developers specifically to be run on Android-based phones (says my super knowledgable source, Wikipedia).  Why Android? Well, I was alluding to this earlier, but RIM’s library of apps is pretty, well, pathetic in comparison to the rest of the smartphone world.  In fact, Android has 130,000 apps available to RIM’s 20,000.  Access to Android apps would “make the RIM platform attractive to consumers as it lacks the strength of the rivals from an apps perspective.”

Listen. If RIM does this, I’ll buy a damn PlayBook.. otherwise, I’m going to wait a year or so.  What’s the point of having a shiny new toy if you can’t even play with it?

Spy Bubble, Is this even legal?

I kind of have mixed feelings about the Spy Bubble app.
It targets 3 key demographics:
1. Jealous/Suspected Cheating Spouses.
2. Parental control for young kids.
3. Employers making sure their employees are using their work BBs for work alone.

Ok, #2 is fine. I get that. It’s the same thing as filtering out certain TV channels through your cable provider, or limiting your child’s settings on the web. That makes sense to me.
And *maybe* #3 is justifiable.
But spying on your spouse because you suspect them of cheating? Anyone remember the story of the woman who is suing her husband for reading her emails because he suspected her of cheating? Yea, that didn’t go quite the way he planned. What makes the Spy Bubble app even MORE outrageous than just, flipping through your partner’s phone while they’re in the shower, or rummaging through their briefcase or purse, are the features that comes with Spy Bubble

In Case Of Emergency (ICE)

Serious post here.  In Case of Emergency is an app that could potentially save your life as it did for one woman. (& it’s free)!
Technically we are all supposed to carry some sort of card which lists our medical information such as: emergency contact, blood type, known medical history, allergies to certain medications etc.  But honestly, do we? Not really. Which is why this app is so great, because now you have zero excuse not to.

5 Minute Clinical Consult

So I’m in the process of moving, sleeping on the floor.. you know the whole deal, trying to find an order-pizza app (no dice) & randomly came across 5 Minute Clinical Consult (5MCC). An app for $80 bucks? I was intrigued.

The BB App World App (tongue twister) states that 5MCC has been the #1 selling handheld version since 1994.

Wait what? a) I’m going to assume “5 Minute Clinical Consult” is the only 5 minute clinical consult, so naturally I’d assume it’d be the #1 seller in its field. but b) handheld and 1994 doesn’t even compute in my brain.
Handheld pieces of paper? This was the mid-1990s. This is the kind of cellphone we’re talking about here:
