Building BB Apps: What have I gotten myself into? Pt1

Wow. It’s been a hot second.  When I first started this blog I promised myself I would add at least a post a day; but I kind of failed yesterday. I just moved into a new apartment & so I’m distracted and discombobulated. I’m sitting on the floor with my computer, TV and doritos. So, yea.
You’re like, I didn’t come here to hear about your personal life. Agreed.

Building BB Apps (not 101, because I’m not even at 101 myself), part 1.  I’ve entitled this post “what have I gotten myself into?” because that’s what I’m thinking right about now.  Overwhelmed. Let’s begin:

First. Go to Blackberry App World.  At the bottom of the homepage you’ll see in really tiny, microscopic print “Developers:”

Foursquare: No longer an English-only app!

Oh Foursquare.  I don’t understand. I just don’t. Can someone please explain to me why people want to announce where they’ve checked in? (For those of you who aren’t familiar with Foursquare, it’s an app that allows its users to check in to various locations, or friends can check you in – and you can earn badges and virtual points or something).

Maybe I’m just old-school, but I kind of value my privacy.  I don’t want people knowing where I am, what I’m doing, what I’m eating, where I’m going, who I’m dating, etc. But clearly I’m an odd-ball.

So exciting news Foursquarers! Foursquare now comes in Español, Deutsch, Italiano, Français, & Japanese (one language I don’t speak). I can appreciate polylingual apps.

BB Chatting (Part Dos): Whats App

Whatsapp! (Pun on what’s up, get it GETIT?!). Anyway, I can’t help but be reminded of my Minnesotan-family members trying to say “what’s up” in their minneSOhtah accent.
I have to thank my friend, who’s currently residing in South Africa, for telling me about this app.

Follow Me As I learn To Develop & Publish My First BB App

This is new.  I’ve decided I’m going to start out on (what seems like) the impossible quest of learning, developing, publishing & marketing my first BB app.

First: I don’t know a THING about developing apps- java, CSS, SDK, flash etc.  It’s all foreign to me. 100% newbie here.
Second: As I learn, I’ll post. I want this to be a step-by-step guide for those of us (like myself) who don’t have a clue where to begin.
Third: I’m not sure yet whether I’ll develop a PlayBook tablet app, or a mobile app (I haven’t even gotten that far yet).  Whatever I do, I will cover basics: building a theme-based app, an app for your blog/site, and then a more complicated app involving GPS locators, maps, directories etc.

Let’s start building apps! o.O

RIM waiving $200 vendor approval fee for PlayBook developers

PS. I like how RIM quotes Crackberry twice, as though they’re some kind of legitimate authority on all things Blackberry. I get that they’re a huge BB blog/forum/review/site, but “crack” “berry” really?  Their name insinuates bb users with cocaine. Um, I’ll pass.

Moving on. RIM is waiving its normally $200 vendor certification fee for app developers.  Apparently just a couple months ago it would cost a user $200 + a long wait of a few weeks to find out whether or not they had been approved as an app developer.  Now it’s free and turn around time for hearing back from RIM is a few days’ time.  (I found this out from pouring through pages of developer forums on blackberry.com).  Under this deal you can submit up to 10 apps before you have to reapply.  Risk-free.

I wonder what other freebies RIM will offer in the coming weeks…

RIM offers free PlayBook for app developers

Is this RIM’s solution to their app-less PlayBook problem?  First we heard that RIM was looking at making the PlayBook compatible with Android’s more than 130,000 apps in an effort to boost PlayBook sales & create a bunch of hype pre-launch.  Now RIM is offering free PlayBooks (through mid-March) for app developers who create a “quality” PB app.  Once you submit it, if RIM likes it, bam! Free PlayBook for you.

It’s that easy. Or is it?

Just in time for Valentine’s Day: “Facebook Stalking” Apps

Oh love.  Anyone doing anything for Valentine’s Day? Yea me either. (Unless you answered “yes” to that question). I’ll probably just be unpacking boxes in my new apartment.  Alone.  Ugh.
ANYWAY.

Scammers are smart.  They spend 99% of their time trying to figure out how to con the average person & 1% actually scamming.  The holidays are considered primetime for scammers, especially V-Day. Why? Because your emotions are all screwed up and you’re emotionally vulnerable and sad. Just really sad. So naturally this is the time when the mother of all mobile (and computer) app scams pops up: the “Facebook Stalking” app scam.

Sounds promising doesn’t it?  The scam generally says something along the lines of– “see who views/stalks/creeps your profile”  then, curiosity piqued, you click the link.  Everything looks pretty legit.  Just like all apps it asks for access to some info in order for the app to work, and sometimes even has you enter a CAPTCHA (smart); but all it does is latch onto your profile, spam your friends’ walls and state how many times you viewed their profile (it makes up a number; it doesn’t actually know). That’s just the computer-version.
